A fund-raising effort that involved selling jars of dry soup mix has been halted by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
The soup mixes, which were assembled by the staff of The Caledonia Argus, were sold at the Argus office and Shapes fitness center. On Tuesday, March 2, both locations were visited by a food inspector from the Department of Agriculture, who said that the soup could no longer be sold in either location. He was acting on a tip from a local citizen.
This is the second year the soup had been sold. The ingredients for the soup, which included spices, bouillon, pasta, dried beans, lentils and peas, were donated by The Argus staff and ECM Publishers, which owns The Argus.
Jars for the soup were donated by various individuals and the soups were labeled at The Argus. They were a popular item for the holidays.
The staff made a total of 190 jars, and 21 remain. The funds raised about $845, which were sent to ECMís Community Affairs Council and are to be used for local projects. In the past, the CAC has donated to Care & Share, the Semcac food shelf, and Camp Winnebago.
