Derek Lanning, Caledoniaís newest police officer began work on March 8.

Originally from Williamantic, Conn, Lanning wanted to be a police officer to help other people and because of the variety of things they do. ìIím a people person. I like to help them if I can,î he said.

After attending Eastern Connecticut State University for two and-a-half years, Lanning transferred to Winona State University in Winona where he earned a bachelors degree in criminal justice.

Lanning moved to Minnesota to meet different people. ìI wanted to get a feel for being on my own and somewhere else,î he explained.

Connecticut University is located near his hometown.

Lanning has worked part time for the Goodview Police Department in Winona for the past 18 months. He is looking forward to working in a small community like Caledonia. ìI like the small town atmosphere. You get to know people on a one-on-one basis,î he said.

He added that Caledonia also works out for his girlfriend, Gale, who works as a counselor in La Crosse.
