Cemetery walk to be part of Sesquicentennial

Posted: 5/11/04

Evergreen Cemetery, where many of Caledoniaís pioneers are buried, is the location for the first cemetery walk ever held in this community.

Sponsored by the Houston County Historical Society, the walk will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 12 and 13, as part of the Sesquicentennial celebration. Cemetery walks are becoming more popular as a way of honoring the contributions and lives of people who were a part of the community in the past.

Caledonia people have agreed to portray the lives of notable Caledonians and newcomers and long-time residents alike will learn more about some of the people who have shaped our history.

Those participating will be dressed in period costumes.

Among the people to be portrayed is James J. Belden, who platted Evergreen in 1866.

Although the acting roles have been filled, volunteers are still needed to act as guides during the walk and to sell tickets. Anyone wishing to help with the walk should contact Lee Grippen at 725-3281 or Angela Murphy at 725-2030.

Those who have purchased a Sesquicentennial button will receive a discount on admission.
