Local races decided
Incumbent Barb Hurley has retained her seat on the ISD #299 school board with 2,174 votes. Newcomers to the school board will be Jean Meyer, who had 1,939 votes, and Mike Novak, who received 1,468 votes. In fourth place was Joel Lidstrom with 1,271 and Michelle Pierce with 1,027. Results will be canvassed Wednesday morning.
In the 3rd District race for county board, incumbent Ann Thompson beat Mark Coffield 1,090 to 839.
Incumbent 5th District Commissioner Nels Gulbranson was upset by challenger Tom Bjerke. The final vote in that race was 1,248 to 577.
Results from the City of Caledonia show write-in candidate Michael Morey with 600 votes for the position of mayor, enough to give him the job for the next two years.
Another announced write-in candidate, Donald ìMikeî Strabley, had 144 votes.
Gary Kruckow, who made a late effort at a write-in campaign, got 216 votes, and incumbent mayor Robert Burns, who did not file for reelection, received 292 votes.
Robert Standish was the top vote-getter with 685 write-in votes for city council. Gary Klug was second with 585. They will fill the seats being vacated by John Klug and Mark Schiltz. Write-in candidate Jeff Sheehan had 216 votes.
In other races, Incumbent Greg Davids (R-Preston) leads Peggy Hanson (DFL) in District 31 B 5,770 to 5,162. Both Fillmore and Houston County results are included in that tally, but not all precincts had reported by 1 a.m. Wednesday.
President Bush has a slight lead in Houston County over Senator John Kerry, 4,182 to 3,860. Gil Gutknecht has 4,970 votes to 2,691 for Leigh Pomeroy in the race for the 1st Congressional District in Minnesota. The three La Crescent city precincts are not included in the total.
