New mayor, councilmen elected
The City of Caledonia will be led by a new mayor and have two new members sitting on the council. The three newcomers make up a majority of the council, and all ran as write-in candidates.
With 600 votes, Michael Morey became Caledoniaís next mayor. He succeeds Bob Burns, who did not run. Burns received 292 write-in votes.
Another write-in candidate for mayor, Donald ìMikeî Strabley, had 144 votes.
Gary Kruckow, who made a late effort at a write-in campaign by posting signs throughout the city, received 216 votes.
Robert Standish was the top vote-getter with 685 write-in votes for city council. Gary Klug was second with 585. They will fill the seats being vacated by John Klug and Mark Schiltz. Another write-in candidate, Jeff Sheehan, had 216 votes.
City clerk administrator Robert Nelson said that the turnout of 1,444 voters was the best in recent memory. About 200 of the voters registered for the first time at the polls. Two of the election judges, Virginia Albert and Rita Noel, said that lines were long but people were patient and polite during the process.
The city used a blank ballot which was tallied separately from the other ballot for the other offices. The city ballot had to be hand-counted due to the write-ins, and the other ballot was scanned at the courthouse.
Election judges finished about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
