Learn what you can, then vote

I have a few concerns about the upcoming election. Primarily, I worry that the negativity and attack ads will turn off voters. I worry that people will rely on the outlandish claims on the internet, appearances on late night television and coffee shop talk instead of credible sources in making their decisions. By the way, there is even a rumor that Jacob Wetterling has been found alive but the media is keeping it quiet until after the election (his mother Patty is running for congress).

As the election draws closer, the mud-slinging from both sides intensifies. Itís hard to know who to believe, especially with campaign tactics that are designed to mislead and misrepresent an opponentís stand on the issues.

There are a lot of things voters can do to help them make their decision. First of all, be informed. There are many newspapers and magazines that take great care in examining the candidateís campaign statements and claims, and also examine the charges they level against their opponents.

For our nationís top spot, watching the presidential debates is helpful. There is still one to go, so if youíve missed them thus far, tune in tonight when Kerry and Bush discuss domestic issues.

For candidates a little closer to home, and who may have an even greater effect on our day to day lives than the Washington lawmakers, watch for local voters guides. The Argus will be publishing such a guide on October 27 and will include local and legislative races.

Candidate forums are another opportunity. Caledonia Community Education and this newspaper are sponsoring a forum for the five school board candidates seeking to fill three positions. The forum will take place on Tuesday, October 26, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions of the candidates.

On the next evening, Wednesday, October 27, Greg Davids and Peggy Hanson will debate in Rushford. This debate, sponsored by the non-partisan group Debate Minnesota, will be moderated by John Torgrimson of the Fillmore County Journal, and I will be co-moderator. Unlike a forum, which is largely informal and features candidates responding to questions, in this situation candidates are given two minutes to introduce themselves, and then will have 10 minutes per question on transportation, education and a local question. Questions from the audience will also be taken.

I hope you will take advantage of the opportunities available to get to know the candidates before casting your vote on November 2.

But above all, please vote! Itís the best way to prove that you care about your city, your state and your country.
