Gas leak clears neighborhood

A two block area around the Richard and Caroline Housker home at 224 SE Street in Caledonia was evacuated for about an hour on Monday afternoon, October 18. Richard and Caroline returned home from work at that time to a house filled with the strong odor of natural gas. The Houskers knew they should not turn on any lights or use their phone, so they went to the home of a neighbor, Palma Utke, and used her phone to call the gas company. Firemen and policemen then went door to door to evacuate people. Phone and electrical service was disconnected to the home. The problem turned out to be the gas control on the Houskersí furnace. Aquila gas workers fixed the problem, and people were told they could return to their home at 5:30. Harold Link, a service technician for Aquila, praised the emergency workers. ěThey did a really good job.î
