New director at Camp Winnebago feels at home

It isnít hard for Theresa Burroughs to say why she took the job as executive director for Camp Winnebago.
ìI love the work that we do, the population that we serve,î she said on September 30.
She was sitting in the conference room of the new dining hall, administrative building at the beautiful camp in section seven of Winnebago Township.
The building opened in May. The multi-purpose dining hall, which also houses female staff, is being remodeled into another camper cabin.
Camp Winnebago serves adults and children with developmental disabilities, primarily in nine one-week sessions during the summer. Campers do swimming, nature and tenting, arts and crafts, and music and drama.
During the off-season, the camp does respite/vacation care to four adults every other weekend.
Burroughs feels at home in her new job, and in more ways than one.
She has been the administrative assistant for the past four years, so she is familiar with the nuts and bolts of operating the 116-acre camp.
Plus she grew up just a couple miles up the hill on the Joe and Linda McCabe farm. She is their daughter.
Both those factors make her very dedicated to the camp, she said. ìI know the campers so well,î she said.
The oldest camper is 70, the youngest is six. Some campers have been coming since the camp opened in 1968 ñ which is the same year that Burroughs was born.
Another goal she has is to promote the use of the camp by people for things like weddings, anniversaries, graduation parties, and to hunters. She would like to see more people use the public campground too. The camp is open from April 1-October 31.
Burroughs welcomes any questions. People can call her at 507-724-2351 or check out their web site at www.campwinnebago.org.
