Caledonia repeated its winning formula against Kingsland on September 24 with a 34-21 football win in Spring Valley.

Like their game against St. Charles, the Warriors (3-1) took a big lead, this time 34-0, before allowing the other team to score.

The Knights (0-4) answered Carl Klugís touchdown on a blocked punt with 21 fourth quarter points to make the score look a bit more respectable. They were aided by recovering two on-side kicks.

But the game was not in jeopardy. In typical Fruechte fashion, he refrained from running up the score. Instead, the Warriors went to a conservative running game that took time off the clock.

Kinglandís bigger size wore down the Warriors, Fruechte said. ìI thought our kids got a little bit tired.î

Cory Messner set the pace of the game with two first quarter touchdown passes, a six yarder to Phil Guillien and a 50 yard pass to Travis Steele, who cut back inside on a tailback flair for a beautiful run to the end zone.

After a one yard run by Justin Conway, Messner connected with Matt Frank for a 20-yard pass, making it 28-0 at the half.

Fruechte said he was glad to see his team get a good jump on Kingsland, which he called a good team despite their lack of victories.

Messner passed for 200 yards, with 7 completions in 10 attempts. The offensive line gave him a lot of time to pass, Fruechte said. ìThey did a tremendous job.î

The line consists of center Chris Summers, right guard Nathan Becker, right tackle Paul Bulman, left guard Josh Wynn, left tackle Wyatt Hammell, and tight end Ross Meyer.

Fruechte also praised Matt Frank, Jacob Hoscheit, and Phil Guillien for a great job running their pass patterns.

Justin Conway and Travis Steele ran hard too, Fruechte added. ìThey [Kingsland] took away our fullback trap that we like to use with Kevin and Carl Klug.î

Other statistics: Conway rushed for 83 yards on 23 carries, and returned three punts for 117 yards. Steele had 31 yards on seven carries. Hoscheit had 71 receiving yards on two catches. Frank caught two passes for 39 yards.

The defense allowed 198 yards rushing and 45 yards passing. Hoscheit and Guillien each had an interception.

ï Up next: After two straight road games, Caledonia returns home this Friday for a 7 p.m. game against Fillmore Central (3-1). The Falcons run a lot of Pro-I plays, similar to the Warrior playbook. ìWe should be familiar with what theyíre doing,î Fruechte said.

Defensively, Fillmore Central runs a 4-3, 4-4, and 5-2. ìOur offensive line will have to be prepared for any defensive front,î Fruechte said.
