Commissioner plugs prescription card plan
Kevin Kelleher is asking his fellow Houston County commissioners to endorse a prescription drug discount card program.
It is sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo). Kelleher is one of 130 members on NACoís board.
NACo selected Caremark/Advanced PCS as the programís provider. Caremark would offer discount cards for anyone to use. There would be no cost to the county, except for distributing the cards and educating people about them, county public health director Linda Grupa said.
She said the cards would most benefit people who donít have comprehensive insurance.
All but one pharmacy in the county would currently accept the cards, Kelleher said, and that pharmacy would likely start accepting the cards if the program were approved.
One other county in Minnesota is looking at the program, Kelleher added He has talked to people from counties outside of Minnesota who are using the cards, and they are positive about it.
ìIíd say by all means, yes,î commissioner Dave Corcoran responded to the idea. He liked the fact that it was offered through a reputable organization, and one to which the county pays dues.
Kelleher said he would continue to do legwork on the project.
