GIRLS GOLF: The Caledonia girls golf team saw plenty of action this past week with both varsity and junior varsity demonstrating their dominance in the area.

Jr. High vs. Fillmore Central

Fillmore Central has no varsity team this year, but the JV got out there on April 18th and brought in some good scores.

ìA score of 265 is a very good score for junior high,î said coach Ken Van Den Boom. ìHaving four girls in the 60s is also very good.

Heather Kuecker was medalist with a 61. Samantha Meyer shot a 67, Emily Klug a 68, and Sarah Eppen a 69. Marissa Bruening came in with a 71, and Sammi Ellingson a 74.

Jr. High vs. Chatfield

The junior high scored even lower on April 21 at Chatfield, coming in with a 251. ìHeather Kuecker was again medalist with a 60,î said Van Den Boom. ì251 is an improvement of 14 over our first meet, which reflects a very good improvement. Iíve been very happy with the progress of the junior girls.î

Scorers were Heather Kuecker 60; Samantha Meyer 61; Sarah Eppen 63; Emily Klug 67; Marissa Bruening 72, and Abby Schulte 73.

Junior Varsity vs. Decorah

Caledoniaís junior varsity crushed Decorah at Silvercrest Golf Course on May 22 with a score of 222 to Decorahís 240. ìLaura Roesler had a very good round with a 51, which made her medalist,î said Van Den Boom. ìA 222 score is very good for a JV team.

Varsity vs. Woodbury

Woodbury High School came down to Caledonia for a two-day event, playing 9 holes on Friday afternoon and 18 more Saturday, April 22 and 23. ìWe were very pleased to have a metro team come to Caledonia to play,î said Van Den Boom. ìIn the 9 hole Friday night match with cool windy conditions, our 190 score was acceptable. In the 18 hole Saturday match, the victory was very good even thought the score by both teams were somewhat higher than expected. It was great to have the opportunity to play against a team from the east metro conference.

Caledoniaís score of 381 for 27 holes edged that of Woodburyís 387. Scorers were Jacquelyn Hauser 46-47-48 (141); Meghan Burg 48-43-50 (141); Katelyn Hauser 49-47-48 (144); Heidi Welscher 50-51-48 (149); Kelsey Kruse 50-50-48 (148); Janelle Lilliquist 47-54-51 (152).

The Spring Grove/Caledonia softball team beat Mabel-Canton and Glenville Emmons last week, with the 10-run rule being invoked in both instances.

Gran struck out 5 batters and walked one. She allowed just one hit, a bloop single over second base in the second inning.

SG/C scored four runs in the first inning, seven in the second and two in the fourth.

Mariah Conway went 1 for 3 and had a double in the second. She had 2 RBIs. Jane Pettit was 2 for 2 with a double in the fourth inning. She batted in two runners.

Against Glenville-Emmons on April 21, SG/C managed 13 runs on 11 hits. G/E had one hit and one run in the fourth inning.

ìWe had a great day at the plate and really aggressive base-running,î said Coach Anderson. ìGran did a super job on the mound and was in control the whole game. She allowed only three base runners.î

SG/C had two runs in the first inning, two in the second, one in the third, five in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Jordan OíHeron was 3 for 4 and hit a triple in the second inning. She scored three times, once on an outfield error.

Girls beat Stewartville 7-5

A surge in the fifth inning propelled the team to a 7-5 win over Stewartville in non-conference play on Friday.

SG/C had two runs in the third inning, four in the fifth inning and one in the sixth. Stewartville scored one run in the first inning and went scoreless for the next four inning until coming back in the sixth for three runs and adding a final run in the last inning.

Busy weekend

for softball girls

The girls met La Crosse Aquinas and Onalaska Luther in two games at the Luther tournament on Saturday.

The girls lost to Aquinas 5-4 in a well-played, competitive game. Jane Pettit pitched for SG/C, and did a nice job in her first varsity start and had good control, said Coach Anderson. Cassie Gran was unavailable due to a family obligation.

ìEach team was able to put together one inning with runs until the sixth inning when Aquinas pushed across the go-ahead run with two walks and a single to drive in the run,î said Anderson. ìWith two outs in the top of the seventh, Ashley King got to third base on a double and outfield error. The shortstop from Aquinas made a great play to end the threat and the game,î said Anderson.

Aquinas scored four runs in the third inning, and the SG/C team answered with four runs of their own in the fourth. Jane Pettit hit a home run over the left-field fence and drove in OíHeron, who had started off the inning with a triple. Augedahl, Ideker, Conway and King all had hits, with King contributing a double.

The Spring Grove/Caledonia team was no match for Onalaska Lutherís hot bats in the afternoon game. SG/C fell 12-4.

ìLuther hit the ball really well, which was impressive for a cold, windy day,î said Anderson.

ìJane Pettit had the big bat with another home run over the left field fence,î said the coach.

Otherwise, the team had a hard time bunching the hits together. Jordan OíHeron tripled in the seventh and Angie Ideker was 2 for 3. OíHeron stood in for catcher Vanessa Augedahl after Augedahl tweaked her knee.

The girls were to meet LeRoy Ostrander / Grand Meadow on Monday evening and will have a well-deserved rest until their game against Mabel-Canton on May 2.
