Fire hits Caledonia home hard
A fire on the night of August 8 heavily damaged the Darrel Houdek home at 703 East Main Street in Caledonia.
The Caledonia Fire Department responded at about 9 p.m., fire chief Chuck Gavin said. They saw smoke and heavy fire at the south end of the house. They went in and knocked the fire down, Gavin said, and returned about two hours later when it flared up again in some insulation. Most of the damage was from heat and smoke, Gavin said. Firemen used about 450 gallons of water on it. They had to tear out the ceiling upstairs to get at it, he said.
Asked about the cause, Gavin said he was still ìdigging into it.î Houdek was at work at the time. Some people who were in the house at the time of the fire were were able to get out, Gavin added.
