Police investigating cause of childís death
The Caledonia Police Department is investigating the December 5 death of a two-year-old boy, Dylan King.
Police responded to a 9-1-1 call at 3:31 p.m. that Monday at 1018 Sunrise Lane.
Charles Stark, the boyfriend of the boyís mother, Sara King, thought the boy was choking on a piece of food, police Chief Randy Shefelbine said.
The boy was unresponsive when Shefelbine arrived. Shefelbine started CPR on the boy. Caledonia Ambulance Service then took the child toward La Crosse. He was transferred enroute to Tri-State Ambulance in an ambulance intercept, and taken to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.
The cause of death is under investigation, Shefelbine said. The victim did not choke on a piece of food, he said.
Shefelbine ordered an autopsy, which was done on December 6, but the cause of death still could not be determined. Medical staff are now doing a toxicology report to see if the death could have been caused by a chemical or poisoning, Shefelbine said. He is hoping to receive information this week.
ìThe investigation is still continuing,î Shefelbine said on December 8. ìI guess we have to see what the results are before we proceed from here.î
A search warrant was also executed on the residence on December 6 to look for chemicals or medications that the boy could have been ingested, Shefelbine said. ìWe do have the cooperation of the homeowner on that,î he said. Nothing was removed from the home, Shefelbine said.
