Robert L. Richards

Robert L. Richards, 82, of rural Freeburg, died Friday, December 30, 2005, at Caledonia Care and Rehab.

He was born March 18, 1923, in Crooked Creek to Ernest and Marie (Roth) Richards. He served in the US Army Air force from 1942 to 1946. He was stationed in India and Burma as a sergeant-flight leader and flight crew chief in Glider Echelon of the 317th Troop Carrier Squadron of the 2nd Air Command Group.

On November 16, 1946, he married Helen Skalla in Minneapolis. She preceded him in death on September 30, 1999.

He is survived by six children, Susan (Mike) Lee of Caledonia; Stephen ìMikeî of Brownsville; Dawn (Art) Schobert and Heidi (Denny) Sickles, both of Lansing; Joy (Don) Rusk of Gilbert, AZ; and Jay (Patty Wright) on the home farm in rural Freeburg; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joe (Nancy) of Sundance, WY; and Jim (Barbara) of New Albin; two sisters, Harriet Peske of Mountain Lake, WA and Ruby (Gaylord) Schoh of Waukon; a sister -in-law, Gladys Richards of New Albin, many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; two infant children; a brother, Bernet; a nephew and a niece.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 4, 2006, at 11 am. at Peace United Church of Christ, Crooked Creek. Rev. Kent A. Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors by the Kenneth Casey VFW Post 5603 of New Albin. Friends may call at the New Albin Community Center on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
