Man arrested for assault, robbery in Caledonia

Charles Edward Riley, 23, was charged with aggravated robbery and assault on February 18 for an incident that occurred on February 16 in Caledonia.

A woman called 9-1-1 that Wednesday afternoon to say she had been assaulted by Riley, who lived with her in an apartment in Caledonia.

She said that Riley had assaulted her the previous day, held a gun to her head, and threatened to shoot her if she didnít give him $1,200 that she had been saving for a car. She said she gave him the money, but took $600 back the next day, put it in the bank, and went to work, hoping that he would be satisfied with $600.

The criminal complaint states that he came to their apartment that afternoon, hit her, and threatened to kill her and her children if she called police. She locked him out of the building and called police, warning them that he might have a handgun.

Shortly after that, Dan Tweten of Caledonia called police to report that a black male had asked to use his phone to call a cab. The man had also used Twetenís bathroom before leaving. Police responded and arrested Edwards nearby.

Minnesota State Patrol officer Kelly McGraw searched Twetenís bathroom and found a fully-loaded Taurus .38 caliber six-shot revolver hidden in a vanity light above the sink.

Riley, a convicted felon, was charged with five felonies: aggravated robbery in the first degree; assault in the second degree; attempted aggravated robbery in the first and second degree; and felon in possession of a firearm. He was convicted on October of 2001 for aggravated robbery in Cook County District Court in Illinois.

Judge James Fabian set unconditional bond at $300,000 and conditional bond at $150,000. Rileyís next court appearance is on February 22. He is currently in the Houston County Jail in Caledonia.

Burglary reported

In other police news, B&M Service at 128 North Kingston in Caledonia reported a break-in on February 13. Someone apparently broke a window, crawled in, and opened the back door for another person. They tried to pry open the back door first. A small amount of cash was stolen. ìWeíre looking at some local kids at that,î Caledonia Police Chief Randy Shefelbine said on February 16.
