Winifred Schwartzhoff

Winifred F. Schwartzhoff, 90, life-long Dorchester area resident, died Monday, May 30, 2005 at Tweeten Health Services in Spring Grove.

Winifred Florentine Schwartzhoff was born on December 23, 1914 in Caledonia, the daughter of Nicholas and Mary (Klug) Welscher. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peterís Catholic Church in Caledonia. After attending rural elementary school, she graduated from Loretto High School in Caledonia. On September 22, 1936 she married Clarence Theodore Schwartzhoff at St. Peterís Catholic Church. The couple farmed near Dorchester.

Winifred was an active member of St. Maryís Catholic Church in Dorchester. She enjoyed sewing, was an accomplished quilter.

Survivors include her eight children, Marie (Donald) Ellestad of Caledonia; Dale (Marie) Schwartzhoff and Gerald (Darlene) Schwartzhoff, both of Dorchester, Earl (Patricia) Schwartzhoff, Rochester; Alice Brown, Chanhassen; Gary (Nancy) Schwartzhoff, Eau Claire, WI; Helen (Robert Boyd) Schwartzhoff, Burnsville; and Joe (Kathy) Schwartzhoff, Decorah, IA; 26 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jeanne (Jack) Dever of Caledonia and Cleo (John) Henderson of Rochester. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Clarence, who died in 1986; a brother, Luman Welscher; and two sisters, Leonedes Schulte and Mildred Truzinski.

Services will be held Thursday, June 2 at 11 a.m. at St. Maryís Catholic Church in Dorchester, IA, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be in St. Maryís Cemetery, rural Dorchester. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a 4 p.m. scripture service.
