ìThe kids have a strong work ethic. They are taking track seriously. They are learning that if you spend time in the weight room and do what youíre told, you can accomplish a lot, If you believe in yourself, great things can happen.î

GIRLS GOLF:

Caledonia/Spring Grove kept its stellar 2005 golf season going with a convincing win at the Section 1A tournament on May 31 in Lake City.

The Warriorsí 346 topped Lake Cityís 363, Kasson-Mantorvilleís 407, and Stewartvilleís 422.

Jacquelyn Hauser led the team and entire tournament with an 83. Meghan Burg had 84, Kelsey Kruse 87, Janelle Lilliquist 92, Heidi Welscher 96, and Katelyn Hauser 99.

They will all advance to the state tournament June 7-9 at Izatyís Golf and Yacht Club in Onamia. They will all also be competing in the individual competition.

Coach Ken Van Den Boom said he was ìabsolutely delightedî with his teamís performance at Lake City. He said they won by working hard on their games. ìTrying to do their very best,î he said.

Albany could be the team to beat at the state, Van Den Boom said. They placed second last year and have all their golfers returning. Benson is also very good, he added. ìThen thereís somebody I donít know about.î

Other schools could be a bit worried about the Warriors if they know their golf history. This will be the teamís 23rd trip to a state tournament. They have won it six times, most recently in 2003. They have experience too: Jacquelyn Hauser has gone four times, Meghan Burg three times, and Kelsey Kruse two times.

And they have perhaps the most experienced coach in the state in ìBoomer.î Heís been at the helm since the program began 28 years ago, and has a career 941-66 record.

Burg said Van Den Boomís approach to the sectional contest helped her focus and do well. He stressed playing the course and not the team, she said.

Theyíll take the same approach to the state tournament, Burg predicted before practice started at MaCal Grove Country Club on June 2. ìBecause everyoneís a good golfer up there. If you get caught up in it, it affects your game,î Burg said.

She also made a prediction at the request of this reporter. ìWeíre going to place in the top three,î she said with a smile. ìWeíre bringing home some hardware.î

Van Den Boom heard her comments and said, ìGutsy little devil.î

His goals were a bit more subdued, in true Dutch fashion. He wants to be in the top four on the second day. Those teams are the last to tee off, and they can then see how their competition is doing.

Van Den Boom said he isnít focusing on the individual competition. ìThe individuals, if youíre playing well, it will take care of itself. You help the team and yourself kind of thing.î

Jacquelyn Hauser placed seventh as an individual last year. The team did not advance to state last year.
