Baseball preview
Editorís note: Caledonia High Schoolís baseball season opens next Monday at Southland. Here is a preview of the season courtesy of head coach Scott Sorenson.
This should be an interesting year as we have several returning key players but we will need to fill some vacant spots in the line-up.
But after a week of practice we are really seeing the seniors step up and take a leadership role to help the younger players to get up to speed with them. I have been very impressed with the work ethic of this group as they all seem to want to get better at the little things.
We have been outside on the black top playing catch and working through a few things but the players are anxious to get out on a full time basis. Especially with the prospect of playing on the new baseball field at the high school.
Returning letter winners
Justin Conway returns as a four year starter. We are looking for him to continue his success at the plate as well as on the mound. Justin is a complete player who will be looked upon the play several positions.
Kyle Welscher returns as a starter at second base and on the mound. Kyle broke into the starting pitching rotation last year and proved he could get the job done so we will be looking for more of that this year.
Ross Meyer returns as a starter at third base and we look for him to add much needed offense to the team.
Zach Serres returns this year and we are looking at Zach for several positions, and we are expecting him to step up at the plate and offer some offensive help for the team.
Nathan Waterhouse will compete for a starting pitching spot as well as an infield position.
Cory Messner should carry the bulk of the catching duties and he has looked good so far.
Simon Augedahl returns as a starter in the outfield where he started late in the year. We also look for him to compete for one of the four starting pitching spots.
Kaleb Schmitz returns after being brought up to fill a roster spot last year for tournaments. We look for him to compete for several positions.
We also have several juniors who did some good things last year on a successful JV team, so we are looking for them to step up this year. The sophomore and freshman classes look strong as well so we will evaluate this week and hopefully some players will step up for us.
