girls golf preview

It will come as no surprise that Caledonia High Schoolís girls golf team should be another excellent one.

The program, one of the best in the region if not state, returns nine letter winners from last yearís team.

ìWe should be good,î coach Ken VanDenBoom said while watching his team members drive balls into netting in the practice room.

But thatís on paper, Boomer quickly added. ìThe game isnít played on paper.î

Returning are seniors Meghan Burg, Jacquelyn Hauser, Maggie McCarthy, and Heidi Welscher; juniors Katelynn Hauser and Kelsey Kruse, and sophomores Kelly Bauer, Tayler Kurk, and Janelle Lilliquist.

The two Hausers, Kruse, McCarthy, and Welscher were all-conference last year. Jacquelyn Hauser placed seventh in the state tournament.

A total of 10 athletes will compete for the six varsity slots. ìThatís when you get a really good team,î VanDenBoom said. He thinks his junior varsity team will be the second best team in the Three Rivers South conference.

ìItís competitive,î McCarthy said. ìBut I think weíre all really happy when we do well.î

ìI think weíre going to have a strong year,î Heidi Welscher added. ìKick Lake Cityís butt.î

Yes, Lake City will be the biggest competition in the section, VanDenBoon added with a bit more diplomacy.

The key will be to stay positive through the ups and downs. ìIt can beat you up mentally through the length of the season,î he said. Players canít get too high when they win and too low when they lose, he said.

The conference is down a team from last year, because Southland does not have a team. Other conference teams are Chatfield, Fillmore Central, and Kingsland.

VanDenBoom has coached the team since its official inception in 1977. It is the winningest girls golf program in Minnesota, he said, with 23 trips to the state tournament and 16 top three finishes.

The season starts on April 7 at Austin Pacelli. VanDenBoom is assisted by Jennifer Snook.
