Finishing second is not something the team is accustomed toñthey have won every meet this year. But it was by no means a disappointment, according to coach Ken VanDenBoom, because it was their best finish ever there.
ìWe defeated all four Big Nine teams,î VanDenBoom said. ìWe are the only Class A in the tournament with the rest of the teams being Class AA. As a team we are starting to show progress when playing against good competition.î
ìBoomerî was glad to see that the top four scores were all under 100. He also praised the scores of Jacquelyn Hauser and Meghan Burg, who shot 85s to lead their team in the 18-hole event. Other C/SG scores were Janelle Lilliquist 94, Kelsey Kruse 95, Heidi Welscher 99, and Katelynn Hauser 102.
Win at Lake City

The team will focus on chipping and putting this week, the coach added. ìWe continue to waste shots around the green.î
Coming up: The team plays in the Sub-Section tournament on May 24 at Cedar River Golf Course in Adams on May 24.
SOFTBALL: The Spring Grove/Caledonia softball team avenged an earlier loss to Houston and beat the Hurri-canes 9-5 on their home turf.
ìThis win put us into a tie with Houston for the SEC conference lead,î said coach Michelle Anderson. ìIt was a big win! Our girls played exceptionally well. They were aggressive at the plate and on the bases. The defense stepped up when needed.î
SG/C started off strong, racking up three runs in the first inning, and following up with two runs each in the second and third for a solid lead. Houston managed one run in the second inning, and rallied with another four runs in the sixth.
C/SG had a run in the fifth and added another in the seventh.
Winning pitcher Cassie Gran ìdid a tremendous job and kept Houston hitters off balance for most of the game,î said Anderson. ìShe located and mixed her pitches really well. ìCatcher Vanessa Augedahl called a great game from behind the plate.î
Vanessa Augedahl was 3 for 5, and Mariah Conway was 3 for 4 with a double in the first inning. She scored twice. Cassie Gran was 2 for 3 with a double in the first.
Jordan OíHeron and Jane Pettit had two hits each. Angie Ideker scored two runs.

The Lions lost their first game to a very good Zumbrota-Mazeppa team 5-2, then won their next two, defeating Mabel-Canton 9-4 and Rushford-Peterson 8-6.
Cougar pitcher Bri Sturm used a great ìriseball,î fastball, and change up to hold the Lions to two hits. Gran matched her well, giving up only three hits and no earned runs. The biggest Z-M hit was a two-run double by Alesha Walter in the fifth inning. Gran walked five batters.
ìThis game showed us we can play with some of the best teams in the section,î Anderson said. ìZ-M is an excellent team and we were very competitive in this game.î
SG/Cís five-run win over M-C came behind a complete game by Jane Pettit. She helped her cause at the plate with a triple in the top of the seventh, and she scored three times.
The German connection came through from Angie and Courtney Ideker, who combined for a 5 for 8 effort and six RBIs at the plate.
A five run third led the Lions to their 2 run win over the Trojans in the consolation championship game. R-P tied it with 3 in the fourth inning, but SG/C countered with 2 in the fifth and 1 in the sixth and hung on for th win.
Gran got the win with a complete game 9-hitter. R-P stranded nine runners, and committed 6 errors.
