Memorial Day services set
Memorial Day services will take place throughout Houston County this weekend.
Here is a list of the ones in the Caledonia area.
At courthouse Saturday
A county-wide Memorial Day program will be held at the Veteransí Memorial in front of the Houston County Courthouse in Caledonia on Saturday, May 28 at 10:30 a.m.
All American Legion and VFW posts in the county will be providing rifles at the salute to the dead.
The names of veterans who have passed away since May of 2004 will be read.
Caledonia
There will be a Memorial Day Service Monday, May 30 at the Caledonia High School Auditorium. The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. and is sponsored by the American Legion Post 191. Emcee and speaker will be Commander Harold Heaney.
Father Gregory Leif will give the invocation and benediction. Musical selections will be offered by Pastor Tony Fink of the United Methodist Church and Jackie Mechtel.
The Caledonia High School band will play several selections, including the Armed Forces Salute.
Scholarship awards will be given to graduating seniors by the Legion and Auxiliary.
Honored will be the Gold Star parents Mary Lewis and Mrs. Art Lampert.
Everyone is welcome.
Brownsville
VFW Post 6801 and the Ladies Auxiliary will begin Memorial Day observances at the Evangelical Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., Monday, May 30.
A program and memorial roll call will be held at the community center at 10:00 a.m. followed by a march to the river. Everyone is invited to the annual pot-luck dinner at the Community Center at noon.
New Albin
Memorial Day services will be held at 9 a.m. at the New Albin Community Center.
All Veterans, VFW members, Ladies Auxiliary, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Brownies will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Center. Please bring your flags.
The program will be as follows: Invocation, Rev. James Olson; Band Selection by Kee High Band directed by Jane Remmen; Gettysburg Address, Kalli Konkel; Address for 2005, Rev. Daniel Knipper; Band Selection; Benediction, Rev. James Olson.
After the program military taps will be held at the Community Center and also at the City Cemetery. Everyone is welcome.
Spring Grove
Services for Memorial Day will be held on Monday, May 30, beginning at 10 a.m. A parade will proceed at 9:45 a.m. from the school to the park. Commander Gary Buxengard will give the welcome and read the roll call. Zane Anderson, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, will give the invocation. The Spring Grove High School Band will perform two numbers. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held in the school auditorium.
Houston
Memorial Day services will be held in the park on Monday, May 30, 10 a.m. In case of inclement weather, services will be held at the Community Center. Alex LeFebvre of Caledonia will sing the National Anthem. The Houston High School band will perform. Two post members who are currently deployed in Iraq, Allen Wojahn and Michael Thomas, will be honored.
Hokah
Memorial Day services will begin with the placing of the wreaths at 8:15 a.m. at the Root River Bridge and Convent Cemetery. The parade will be at 9 a.m. starting at City Hall and proceeding to the city park where Jim Sauer will give a speech. Ceremonies will then be held at the two cemeteries.
