"Thanks, readers, for your responses" 6/1/05

You may have noticed that The Argus ran a reader survey a few months ago. We received a grand total of nine responses. Not the greatest response for a 3,000 circulation paper.

But that really didnít surprise me. People have opinions. They just donít take the time to put them on paper. I always figure when I get a comment on something, there are 20 other people who want to say the same thing, but just donít get around to it. Life gets in the way.

Look at it this way; I have read a daily paper for most of my life. Iíve worked on a paper for half of my life. And Iíve never filled out a reader survey.

So thanks to those nine folks who took the time to tell us what they think. And thanks also to the other 2,991 who read the Argus!

Feel free to write us a letter telling your opinions on any subject. Our address is P. O. Box 227, Caledonia, MN 55921, or email it to david.heiller@ecm-inc.com

Here are comments from the surveys:

ï I think you do a very good job with the Argus. I would like to see more coverage on non-sport school activities, like Knowledge Bowl, the play, etc.

ï (I like) Old snapshots, commentary. All your articles on everything. I miss the small town news like Hokah (Aggie) and Brownsville News. I donít think it should be sold a day earlier in the business places. They can wait until Wed. like the rest of us. I enjoy the Home and Garden guide and all the special supplement inserts.

ï You could improve by purchasing the Houston County News when they feature the seniors for graduation! A nice picture and a paragraph or two about them. They have businesses who sponsor the insert. The Argus has everyone on the ìmonkey barsî and the paper is full of ads. itís not really a tribute to the seniors, itís an insert full of ads so the Argus can make money. Itís a very, very poor tribute. Attending school for 13 years, the students deserve a better recognition. i wanted to write a letter to the editor last year but I am not that type of person so I would like to thank you for putting this in so I can tell you how I feel. Other than this I enjoy the Argus every week. Thank you.

ï I actually think itís very good the way it is. i love the human interest stories (like the Kilimanjaro story) and the area history stories.

ï I especially like the commentary page; itís fair, gives differing views; itís entertaining and informative. I wish some of my papers could be received sooner. Many times I receive my papers several weeks old.

ï Generally fair and accurate reporting.

ï Thereís not a whole lot that I like about the Argus. Itís your typical small town paper. It takes me about 5 min. to go thru it. It would be really nice if you would keep the school lunch menu consistently in the same place. Also, try not to make so many mistakes so you donít have to have a special section for the corrections.

ï How come you havenít covered all the class of 2005 names and a short story about them. You canít possibly get them all in before the end of May.

ï Bring back pages from the past. Quit the stories about axe handles, tundra swans, walking in the snow, grass fires, opposums, your old barn, rocks and post holes, tractor rides. Weíve had all these experiences. Get rid of David Heiller (downhill since he started).
