Sports briefs, week of May 23, 2005
BASEBALL: Caledonia High Schoolís baseball team played Plainview in the Section 1A tournament on May 28 in its second game, winning 4-3. The Warriors then lost to La Crescent 8-4 on May 30, which eliminated them from the post-season.
BOYS GOLF: Caledonia/Spring Groveís boys golf team finished fifth out of seven teams in the sub-section golf tournament on May 24 at the Cedar River Country Club in Adams with a score of 374.
Rushford-Patterson won with a 332 score.
Chad Tilleraas and Alex Eglinton led the team with 92s which tied them for 16th overall. Other Warrior scores were Tyler Schulte 94, Kyle Runningen 96, Garrett Cross 105, and Mitchell Massman 106.
C/SG had a rebuilding year in boys golf this year. Only one senior is on the team, Tyler Schulte.
ìThe young gentlemen did what I asked them to do and that was to get better,î coach Mitch Mullins said. ìIf you followed their scores throughout the spring their scores did reflect that. Now their real golf season begins and that is this summer. They know if they want to continue to get better they need to put in a lot of golf before next spring. We want to get back to the level of play where we are a team to be reckoned with.î
TRACK:
The Caledonia/Spring Grove/Mabel track teams are well-represented this week at section competition following excellent results at sub-sections in Rushford last week.
The boys took second place at subsections, earning 111 points. La Crescent, the first-place team, had 128.
Two runners qualified in the 100 meter. First-place winner Travis Steeleís time was 1:11;26, and Clint Grabhorn, who finished third, had a time of 11.62. Steele qualified in the 200 as well, finishing third in 23.46.
Andy Marnach took first in the 400 with a time of 51.83. Phil Guillien was third in that event with a time of 53.20.
The 400 relay team finished in 44.79 for first place, and the 1600 relay team qualified for sections with its third-place finish of 3:36.65.
In the high jump, Kyle Hunzeker was first with a jump of 5'11 1/2".
Chris Jandt will advance to sections following first place honors in both the long jump and triple jump. His distance in the long jump was 19'6" and his triple jump distance was 43'5 1/4". Brandon Skifton qualified for sections in the triple jump with a distance of 37'3 1/2".
For the girls, Alecia Fruechte advances in the 100 after finishing third with a time of 13:56.
Sarah Colleran will compete in the 400. She finished second in subsections with a time of 1:01.86.
The 400 meter girlsí relay team took third with a time of 51.69, a nd the 800 relay team was also third, finishing in 1:51.77.
Brianna Polus was the clear winner in the high jump and at 5'9" had the best jump in the section. Alecia Fruechte advances to sub-sections for her second-place jump of 5'2 1/4".
In the triple jump, Katie Wiste was third with a distance of 32'2 3/4".
Amelia Schaller will compete in both the discus and shot put at sections this week. Her discus throw of 120'2" put her in first place and in the shot she threw 36' 5 1/4". Molly Schaller qualified for sections in the discus for a throw of 107' 1".
The girls team finished fourth with a team score of 86.
Sections are May 31 and June 2 in Byron. The state meet is June 10 and 11.
GIRLS GOLF: Caledonia/Spring Grove ran the table with its sub-section 1A golf tournament victory on May 24.
Not only did their 363 score easily defeat La Crescentís 437 for first place, all of the players advancing to the Section 1A tournament on May 31 at Lake City are from C/SG.
They are Jacquelyn Hauser, who led the charge at the sub-section meet with 87; Meghan Burg (90), Heidi Welscher and Katelyn Hauser (93), and Janelle Lilliquist (95). Kelsey Kruse finished seventh with 104. The tournament was held at Cedar River Country Club in Adams.
All six of the girls were also named to the all-conference team.
Coming up: Five girls and the winning team advance to the state tournament at Izatys on June 8 and 9.
