Snow will turn warnings into tickets

About 400 people have received warning citations from the Caledonia Police Department to remind them of the new alternate side parking regulations. The department will continue to issue warnings until December 1 or until the first snowfall, which could be any day.

It may take residents, and visitors, some time to adjust to the alternate side parking regulation. Caledonia Police Chief Randy Shefelbine said that many drivers are confused. He tells people that when they come home in the evening, they should park according to the next dayís date since the alternate side rule goes into effect at midnight. If the next dayís date is even, drivers should park on the side of the street that has even-numbered addresses. If odd, then they park on the side with odd-numbered addresses. The regulation is in effect between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. from November 1 to March 31. The ordinance applies regardless of weather conditions.

The purpose of the ordinance is to facilitate the removal of snow from city streets. It applies not only to cars, but to trailers, boats, campers, trash containers and other obstacles.
Once real tickets take the place of warnings, the fine will be $10 for the first violation if paid within 14 days, and will double after that time.

Vehicles in violation of the ordinance may be towed at their ownerís expense.
The alternate side parking rule was attempted in November of 1967, but was later repealed.
