GIRLS BASKETBALL PREVIEW:
By Diana Hammell
Argus Sports Reporter
The Caledonia girlsí basketball team returns 11 letter winners this year, and coach Scott Sorenson says that all 11 saw a lot of varsity minutes last year.
ìWe have the perfect size team,î said Sorenson, ìenough depth to tire teams out and small enough that everyone sees the floor for extended minutes every night.î
Four of these letter winners are seniors, all of which are returning starters: Leah Bartelson, Mariah Conway, Rachel Ellenz and Kate Hanson. ìIt is tough to talk too much about these four without mentioning the others as they play so well together and have played together for many years,î said Sorenson. ìThey are the heart and soul of this program.î
ìFour juniors, Lynn Bauer, Jane Pettit, Ashley King and Danielle Frank also return. All of these girls saw extended minutes for us last year on varsity and really made an impact,î said Sorenson. ìWe are looking for them to really step up their play and get us over the hump.î
Three sophomores return as well: Sarah Colleran, Alecia Fruechte and Brianna Vick. ìSarah was the only one that really saw extended time last year as Brianna played mostly JV and was brought up to round out our roster during tournament time last year,î said Sorenson. ìAlecia struggled with injuries that kept her out of most of the games. We really look for these two to make an impact this year.
ìAfter a week of practice things are looking okay,î said Sorenson. ìWe will look to create off the defensive end as these girls have great athleticism and speed so we are looking to put pressure on the other teams the whole game and hopefully get our fast break going.
ìWe are small in numbers but I look at that as a good thing as all 11 should have an impact every night as long as they understand their role on the team,î said Sorenson.
ìWe will be working hard the next few weeks to see where we stand. One of the main things we need to work on is commitment to getting better. If we want to be there in the end we need to put a lot of things aside and get into the gym and be productive. If we can commit it should be a successful year for these girls.î
The girls open their season on November 29 at Chatfield. Their first home game is December 1 against Rushford-Peterson.
