Churches trick-or treat for the food shelf
The cupboards are getting bare at the Semcac Food Shelf in Caledonia, but director Iyla Mulvenna is hoping to change that this Halloween.
Mulvenna saw an article in the Houston County News, a newspaper in La Crescent, last year about a food drive that looked both fun and effective.
It described how churches in that community had members of its youth groups go trick-or-treating on Halloween for food shelf items. It is a big effort there, with 106 youths and 26 adult drivers taking part.
Mulvenna contacted churches in the Caledonia area, and has had three of them commit to performing a similar effort here. She is hoping that people who answer their doors on October 31 are not too surprised to see the older kids asking for food shelf items, and that people give generously. ìWeíre much lower than normal,î Mulvenna said on October 13 of the inventory at the food shelf.
