Miller gets regional Rotarian award

Miles Miller of Caledonia received Rotary Internationalís 2005 Four-Way Test award on September 6.

Miller, a retired school superintendent, was chosen from a group of seven Rotary Clubs in the La Crosse region. He received the honor at the 16th annual Four Way Test dinner, auction, and awards ceremony at the Valhalla/Cartwright Center in La Crosse.

He told the audience that he was carrying on a tradition passed on by his father to be active and pay your civic dues.

The Caledonia Rotary also received a Community Service award at the program for its school concession stand/restroom facility, which is currently being built by the high school athletic fields.

Here are some of the reasons that he was given this honor, according to Caledonia Rotary president Rose Weichert:

Miller has had near-perfect attendance during his 12 years as a Rotarian. He served as club secretary for seven years, as a board member for nine years, and as club president during Rotary Internationalís centennial year in 2004.

He also served on the executive board for the concession stand/restroom facility project.

Miller is a Paul Harris Fellow, and has donated to Rotary Internationalís PolioPlus effort for three years and to the ìEvery Rotarian Every Yearî campaign.

He is an active participant in nearly all annual club projects and activities, including the Rotary Rose Sale, the highway pickup, the soup and sandwich supper, the annual student scholarship program, the benefits held for needy community individuals, the family Christmas social and Caledoniaís Rotary Reads program.

Miller compiles the clubís annual 25-page membership handbook. He also extends himself to also serve on committees outside the club. He helped plan the District Conference held in LaCrosse last year, and he currently is serving on the ìJust Zoo Itî board as well as acting as our team leader for Relay for Life. He also works at the Rotary lights display in LaCrosse.

His community spirit efforts do not stop with Rotary. Miller completed his Rotary presidency just in time to take up his presidency for the Caledonia Lions. As a Lion, he was instrumental a few years ago in establishing a community park with modern playground equipment, a sensory garden and picnic shelters. He also is a Lion volunteer who regularly takes tickets at athletic events.

Miles and his wife, Jeanne, are selling their home in Caledonia and moving to Burnsville to be closer to some of their children and grandchildren.
