Betty Smerud
Betty Mae Smerud, 81 of New Albin, IA died Thursday morning, September 15, 2005 at her home.
Betty was born in New Albin on January 14, 1924 to Gail and Florence (Lane) Gantenbein. She was a graduate of the New Albin High School. She was married to Edmund Smerud on January 13, 1944 at St. Josephs Catholic Church in New Albin.
She had lived in Wyoming as well as New Albin. She held various nursing positions over the years.
She is survived by seven children: Alana (Pete) Fee of New Albin IA, Steve (Sue) Smerud of Shoshoni WY, George (Evelyn) Smerud of Anchorage AK, Carver (Linda) Smerud of New Albin IA, Eddie (Janice) Smerud of New Albin IA, Sally (John) Fink of New Albin, and Gus (Patty) Smerud of Brice Pairie WI; 26 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and two siblings; Gary (MaryLou) Gantenbein of Riverton WY, Gerigh (Alice) Gantenbein of Riverton WY.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Edmund in 1998, her parents and three brothers Gordon, Gail and Joe Gantenbein.
The Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing is assisting the family.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at St. Josephís Catholic Church in New Albin with Fr. Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial will be in the New Albin City Cemetery in New Albin. Friends may call on Sunday from 3 to 7 pm at the Community Center in New Albin where there will be a Parish Scripture Service at 7p.m.
