Hokah man charged in car theft

A Hokah man suspected of car theft was arrested on September 15.

Jeffery Gerald Watters, 30, of 220 Como Street, Hokah, has been charged by the Houston County Attorneys Office for using a motor vehicle without consent, a felony.

On September 15 at 6 a.m. the Hokah Police Department received a report of a theft of a 1997 Ford pickup truck taken overnight from a residence in the City of Hokah. The vehicleís identification number was entered into a stolen vehicle database.

Information was received that the vehicle was in the La Crescent area prior to being reported stolen. A La Crescent police officer who spotted the vehicle prior to its being reported stolen was able to provide authorities with a description of the driver.

The Stoughton, Wisconsin, Police Department located the stolen vehicle abandoned in a parking lot in their city. A man matching the description was observed leaving the vehicle. After a detailed investigation, authorities determined that the suspect was headed back to the La Crosse, WI area by bus.

At 4:15 p.m. that day, Watters was arrested at the Hokah Police Department and transported to the Houston County Jail, where he is being held. Bail was set at $2,000 unconditional and $5,000 conditional. His next court appearance is Septembe 26 at 10:30 a.m.
