Petersen offered sheriff's position

The Houston County Board agreed on September 27 to offer the job of sheriff to Darryl Petersen of Rochester.

Petersen, who recently retired from the Minnesota State Patrol, was one of two finalists. The other was Ken Frank, who is currently chief deputy under Sheriff Mike Lee. Lee, whose term as sheriff would have ended at the end of 2006, resigned his position. He asked the board to appoint Frank to the position until the next election, but commissioners instead opted to advertise for applicants. Commissioner Kevin Kelleher said that the board was following a precedent set when former county attorney James Fabian was appointed judge. At that time, the board advertised for a replacement and hired Rick Jackson, who was later elected.

Petersen is a former Caledonia resident and was with the State Patrol from 1979 to 2004.

The salary for the positon has not been determined.
