Ropes candidate for 31B senate seat

Sharon Erickson Ropes of Winona has announced her intention to seek the District 31 seat in the Minnesota Senate.

ìI am deeply committed to the people of rural Minnesota,î Ropes said. ìFamilies want their children to receive the best education possible so they can succeed. As I talk with people across Fillmore, Houston and Winona Counties, they tell me that affordable health care, good roads and safe communities are top priorities. Iím a hard worker so I want to bring these concerns to the State Capitol, because they are also very important to me and my family.î

The seat is currently held by State Senator Bob Kierlin of Winona who has announced he is retiring. Ropes was Kierlinís opponent in the 2002 campaign. She received 3,779 votes to 4,846 for Kierlin in Houston County. District-wide, she had 13,973 votes to 14,793 for Kierlin.

ìI appreciate Senator Kierlinís respectful service to District 31 and would like the opportunity to continue his commitment to working in a bi-partisan manner,î Ropes said. ìThe expensive gridlock at the Capitol during the past session shows that it is more important than ever to elect reasonable representatives who put people before politics and are willing to work respectfully with each other.î

Ropes is married to Dr. Milton Ropes and has three adult children. She has a B.S. in nursing from the College of Saint Teresa in Winona.

A former U.S. Navy officer and Winona School Board chair, Ropes is a small business owner and volunteers as Minnesota PTA State President.
