Sailor heading for home continent
Ardell Lien, the 70-year old Caledonia man who is sailing solo around the world, is back in his home hemisphere and headed for Brazil.
Lien, a heart and kidney transplant recipient, left from San Diego on May 7, 2005, on a trip around the world in the hopes of raising public awareness of the importance of organ donation. After completing the first leg of his journey, he returned home for about a month to undergo a mandatory annual physical. He set sail again on January 31.
Following what he described as a ìtough passageî from Durban, South Africa, to East London, he arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, on February 17.
On March 20, he anchored down in the island of St. Helena in the South Atlantic. His reached the US Air Force Base in Ascension Island on April 4.
On April 8, Lien described the seas as ìbig and disorganized.î His last entry on April 9 reported that the winds had died down and he was burning diesel and sailing slowly.
Lienís next stop will be Brazil, and he will also stop in Trinidad. He hopes to reach Panama by June 1, and from there he will sail to Hawaii to complete his journey.
Lienís route can be tracked at www.shiptrak.org. Enter his call sign of N7PCY. Reports of the voyage can also be found at www.organ-donation-for-life.com.
