Kelleher announces bid for senate seat
Houston County Board Chairman Kevin Kelleher has announced that he is running for the District 31 state senate seat being vacated by Bob Kierlin (R-Winona).
Kelleher has represented District 2 in Houston County for the past 16 years.
ìThe current political situation in Minnesota and the country as a whole concerns me deeply,î said Kelleher. ìSadly, both parties seem to rejoice in each othersí failures and count those failures as their own political gains. The negative consequences that this has on the citizens who are trying to get things done is slowly wearing people out. More and more, I hear citizens talk of throwing in the towel, since ënothing ever gets done at the capitol anyway.íî
Kelleher is running as an independent. Sharon Ropes of Winona, who unsuccessfully challenged Kierlin four years ago, is the DFL candidate.
ìI want to take my non-partisan approach and well known bare-knuckles work ethic to the State Senate,î said Kelleher. ìThe citizens of District 31 deserve a senator who will represent this area and not a political party with its roots and allegiances firmly grounded in the Twin Cities.î
Among the issues Kelleher named as being of particular importance are roads, education, and agriculture and the environment.
Kelleher lives in rural Houston and is a sheep farmer.
