Chamber has parking concerns

The Caledonia Chamber of Commerce is asking the City of Caledonia to enforce the two-hour parking limit in the downtown area.

At the city council meeting of August 14, chamber vice-president Susan Bauer approached the council with concerns from chamber members about vehicles parked beyond the posted two-hour limit, especially in the block from the stoplight west to Decorah Street. Occasionally there are vehicles parked all day in that block, said Bauer. The vehicles belong to renters who live above businesses. The police do not ticket vehicles that are over the limit.

Caledonia Mayor Mike Morey asked Bauer to have the Chamber draft a letter stating that its members are in agreement that the parking limits should be enforced and asking the city to take action.

Bauer questioned why that would be necessary since there is already an ordinance in place.

The council took no action on the matter.

Fire barn will be replaced

Prior to the start of Mondayís meeting, council members toured the street department, electric department and fire department garages in an attempt to assess needs for the future.

When the meeting resumed, the council agreed to have the public safety committee begin a study for replacement of the fire barn within five years.

In other business, the council approved the appointment of Kevin Schmidt, Timothy Schroeder and Nathan Speltz as volunteer firefighters.

Local government aid increases

City clerk administrator reported that Local Government Aid for 2007 increased by about five percent over 2006. The amount the city expects to receive is $787,371. The figure for 2006 was $747,863.
