GIRLS SOCCER: The Caledonia girls soccer team sailed to a 7-1 victory against Austin in the season opener on Saturday.
Katie Schutz scored the first goal of the game at 6:00, followed by a goal from Sara Kasten at 17:00. Kayla McCormick scored with an assist by Claire Goetzinger, and Emily Welscher followed with a goal at 23:00. Kasten ended the half with her second goal of the game.
Kasten scored the first goal of the second half and Goetzinger scored with at 54:00. Austinís lone goal came at 61:00.
The Warriors had a total of 22 shots on goal.
BOYS SOCCER: Caledonia started its boys soccer season with a 1-0 victory over Austin on the road on August 26.
Kaleb Schmitz got the goal with an assist by junior Matt Moss at the 27 minute mark.
Austin attacked hard in the second half. They had the wind at their backs, and left just one defender.
ìWe finally had to shell up,î coach Tom Krinke said. ìIt was wild for the last 15 minutes. It was a typical Caledonia game. People were screaming and yelling. We bent and bent and bent and never broke.î
