New hair salon open in Caledonia

It was quite a change for Tamiko Hubka to go from a busy day spa and salon in La Crosse with 15 stylists to her one-woman shop in Caledonia, but sheís happy she made the change. In January, she opened Tamikoís Salon at 211 E. Grove in Caledonia.
Hubka worked for more than five years at Visual Changes in La Crosse, but decided it was time for a change. Originally from Cresco, Iowa, she became acquainted with the area when she began working at Northern Engraving in Spring Grove before beauty school. Caledonia reminds her of her hometown, she said, and thatís one of the reasons she decided to settle here. Being her own boss gives her more time to spend with her three-and-a-half year old daughter, Georgina, as well.
With the help of boyfriend Kevin Steele, she installed new fixtures, cabinets and counters in her new space, and gave the shop a fresh coat of paint.
Making people feel good about themselves is what is most rewarding for Hubka. And, she has lots of ways to do that. In addition to offering hair services such as cutting, styling, color and perms, she also offers manicures, facial waxing, scalp treatments, manicures and the Extreme Backscratching artificial nail system. Hubka spent a week in Canada learning the Grund Cutting System, which holds that there are only five basic haircuts and a stylist works within the framework of those five styles to interpret the latest trends. Hubka also carries the Grund line of hair care products.
ìProducts are a huge factor,î said Hubka. ìThey make a haircut work, and finish off the style.î
Several clients have followed Hubka to her new salon, and she is happy with the local response she has received as well.
ìItís going better than I expected,î she said.
Although she may entertain the idea of adding an employee in the future, Hubka said that sheíll be running the shop solo for the foreseeable future.
ìIím trying to keep it simple,î she said.
The number for Tamikoís Salon is 725-4247. She is closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.
