BOYS BASKETBALL: Caledonia finished its home boys basketball schedule with two wins.
They pounded Southland 60-38 on February 13 in a make-up game, and came back to top Fillmore Central 58-47 four nights later.
ìEverything just came together in the last two games,î coach Josh Diersen said. His feels his team is peaking at the right time, with playoffs starting next week.
GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Caledonia Warriors handily defeated their last two opponents of the regular season last week.
Valentineís Day was also Parents Night in the Caledonia high school gym, and the girls presented their parents and fans with a big win over Mabel-Canton 76-39.
Friday, February 17, the team traveled to Harmony for another win over Fillmore-Central 87-45. If the difference in score from their last meeting is demonstrative of the gains Caledonia has made during the season, hereís the yardstick: In their first meeting, Caledonia defeated F-C by 9 points; last Friday the point spread was 42.
GYMNASTICS: Nine gymnasts competed in section competition on Saturday in Pine Island. Caledonia/Spring Grove placed ninth with a score of 121.05. Pine Island was first with a score of 144.75
On the uneven bars, Samantha Wermager had the highest score for her team at 8.075. Katie Wiste had 7.9, Karly Misch scored a 7.7. Kaley Cross and Julie Halverson had 6.45 and 5.6 respectively.
On the balance beam, Misch ended up in 12th place with a score of 8.125, the highest finish for the team. Wiste had 6.85, Wermager had 6.75, Ally Sheehan scored 6.3 and Melissa Wray scored 4.05.
In the floor exercise, Misch earned an 8.275. Wiste scored 7.475, Wermager scored 6.975, Cross had 6.725 and Megan Buttell scored 5.925.
On the vault, Wermager had the high score for Caledonia/Spring Grove with 8.625 points. Wiste had 8.45; Misch scored 8.275, Halverson had 8.1 and Emily Klug scored 7.85.
In the all-around, Karly Misch had 32.375, Katie Wiste scored 30.675 and Samantha Wermager scored 30.425.
WRESTLING: Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Kingsland (GMLOK) dashed the high hopes of the Warriors wrestling team last Saturday in Rochester.
The Bulldogs avenged a regular season loss to beat the Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston 37-21 in the Section 1AA team wrestling tournament semifinals on February 18.
The loss followed a 55-13 Caledonia win over Lake City in the quarterfinals earlier in the day.
GMLOK lost to top-seeded Plainview/Elgin-Millville 28-26 in the finals, so the Gophers will advance to the state team tournament on March 2.
