Never give up.

Andrell Hudson gave that advice and a lot more to Caledonia Elementary School students at the schoolís annual Martin Luther King program.

Hudson, a junior at Caledonia High School, is African American. He first talked about the roles that Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King played in sweeping away Jim Crow laws in the south. They stood strong, proud, and tall, he said.

ìI would like to encourage all you elementary students to work hard in your studies, even if it already seems youíre doing your very best,î Hudson said.

He told them to spent a few extra minutes on their school work, and to prioritize their time. ìThere will be plenty of time for fun and leisure once you are on top of everything,î he said.

Ask for help too, Hudson added. ìThere are no dumb questions.î Hudson encouraged the kids to take part in sports, plays, and other extra curricular activities, but always remember that school work comes first.

ìAnd never, ever give up,î he said.

The program featured many comments and readings by fifth graders, led by Kevin Lapham, who read passages from speeches by Martin Luther King.

Student Laura Peter said she had a dream to stop cancer and find homes for orphans. Skylar Schoh wished for world peace and an end to wars.

Students sang songs such as ìPeace Like a Riverî and ìWe Shall Overcome.î Fifth grade teachers Becky Newgaard and Dorothy Pettit organized the event, which was held on Martin Luther King Day.
