Wayne Smith
Wayne S. Smith, 90, of La Crescent, died on Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at the Claddagh House in La Crescent.
He was born in Pleasant Hill Township, Minnesota to Lindley and Emma (Heyer) Smith. Wayne was a United States Army veteran during WWII, serving in the Pacific Theatre. He farmed in New Hartford, Minnesota his entire life, retiring in 1971.
On June 2, 1984 he married Jean Sammon in La Crescent and she preceded him in death on May 31, 1995. Wayne was an avid fisherman and hunter, enjoyed playing cards and spending many winters in Arizona with his wife. He also was a lifetime member of Gittens-Leidel American Legion Post #595 in La Crescent.
Wayne is survived by a brother-in-law, Philip Piazza of La Crosse; and two nephews, along with grand nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Jean, he was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Piazza.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m.. Friday, July 28, at the La Crescent United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Budd officiating. Burial with military honors provided by Gittens-Leidel American Legion Post #595 will follow in the Hiler Cemetery.
Friends and family may call at the church on Friday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services. Memorials may be sent to the La Crescent United Methodist Church. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent is handling the arrangements.
