Smaller Sanness manure pit approved

The Houston County Planning Commission approved conditional use permit (CUP) for manure storage pit for Scott Sanness at its June 22 meeting.

A CUP is required for manure storage of over 20,000 gallons. Sannessí pit would hold approximately 45,000 gallons of liquid.

The planning commission recommended approval with several conditions:

ï Follow all state, federal, and local regulations;

ï Inject all manure;

ï Install biolfilters on all ventilation fans;

ï Submit the final engineered design for the basin enzymes added to hog feed to help reduce odor.

The county board will vote on the application on July 11.

Sanness has an existing zoning permit to build a hog confinement barn for up to 299 animal units in section eight of Wilmington Township. A CUP is not required for an operation of fewer than 300 animal units. A hog is 1.4 animal units.

The county board denied an application for Sanness to expand an animal feedlot up to 480 animal units and construct a manure storage basin on June 20.

In 2005 Sanness applied for a permit to operate an animal feedlot with more than 300 animal units, and to construct a manure storage basin. It was for up to 990 animals units, or 2,475 hogs. The planning commission and county board denied the application.

The application approved by the planning commission on June 22 was different from his previous applications in that he doesnít plan to expand to over 300 animal units, zoning administrator Bob Scanlan told The Argus on June 27.
