Jail meetings Thursday
Two meetings about the proposed Houston County criminal justice center (CJC) will take place on Thursday, March 16.
The jail planner and architects will first meet with county commissioners at 1 p.m. in the commissionersí room in the basement of the courthouse. The most detailed drawings to date will be shown at this meeting, which is open to the public.
There will also be an open house where proposed plans will be displayed at 5:30 p.m. in the Caledonia High School commons.
This will be followed by a public forum and a formal presentation of the process of planning at 6 p.m. in the school auditorium.
The current plans are for the CJC to be located to the south and east of the current courthouse. Some residents would like to see it located elsewhere in the city, citing concerns such as aesthetics, safety, and congestion.
The proposed 72,000 square foot CJC will house a 42-bed jail, sheriffís department, courtrooms, and offices of county attorney, court administration, court services, and victim services.
