Ely announces run for county sheriff

Former Houston County deputy Doug Ely has announced that he is a candidate for Houston County Sheriff.

Ely is a 1985 graduate of Caledonia High School. He attended Alexandria Vo-Tech and received a two-year law enforcement degree in 1987. He worked as a deputy with the Houston County Sheriffís office from 1990 to 1997, under former sheriffs Dennis Swedberg and Mike Lee. He currently works as a sales manager at Eversole Motors.

ìItís time for some changes,î said Ely. ìI have always wanted to be sheriff, itís a life-long goal.î

With the assistance of local police agencies, Ely has kept up his license ìknowing this day would come,î he said. He recently became Taser-certified.

Ely is a member of the Caledonia volunteer fire department and president of the Caledonia Volunteer Fire Department Relief Association.

Ely and his wife, Lisa, have two children: Jennifer, 11, and Symon, 8. The family lives in Caledonia.

Ely said his goal as sheriff would be to work hand in hand with other law enforcement agencies in the county so that the various departments function as a single team. He said he would work to reduce drug-related crimes, develop the sheriffís office to its full potential and run the new jail efficiently and effectively.

Other candidates that have announced that they will run for sheriff are Ken Frank and Brian Swedberg.
