BASEBALL: Caledonia defeated Kingsland 2-0 at home in last weekís only baseball game on May 9.
Coach Eliott Kranz had these comments about the game:
ěWe had a stellar performance from junior pitcher Simon Augedahl. He pitched all seven innings striking out sixteen getting the win and the shutout. He was keeping hitters off balance all night.
ěSenior Cory Messner knocked in the two runs in the fifth with a two out single. Senior Craig Halverson was 2-3 on the day. We continue to play well here at the end of the season and continue to improve as we head into the playoffs.î
ď Up next: Caledonia played a double header today against Fillmore Central/Lanesboro on May 15. They end the regular season on Thursday with Rushford-Peterson at Rushford.
Playoffs start May 23rd at the high seed.
BOYS GOLF: The boys golf team had its best outings of the year last week, posting its best 18-hole score at the Lake City Invitational May 8 and best nine-hole score against Fillmore Central the next day.
ěWe are starting to get three scores, now we need to get a fourth,î said coach Mitch Mullins. ěWe need to continue to get better.î
The boys played against Fillmore Central May 9 and posted a team score of 166. Alek Eglinton and Mitchell Massman were co-medalists with scores of 39. Chad Tilleraas had a 43 and Kyle Runningen shot a 45.
Other varsity golfers were Tyler Schulte, who had a 47 and Craig Loeffler, who shot a 48.
Fillmore Central had a score of 174 and was led by Matt Quanrud, who shot a 41.
The junior varsity won its match against Fillmore Central 182-214. Garrett Cross and Erik Fisch had 44s, and Tyler Hauser and Luke Daley each shot 47.
Third at Lake City Invitational
The boys took third at the Lake City Invitational with a score of 340. Rushford-Peterson took second by just one stroke at 339, and Kasson-Mantorville was in first place with 324.
Mitchell Massman had the best score for the Warriors with an 84 for 18 holes. He had 39 on the first nine and 45 on the second. Alek Eglinton and Kyle Runningen ended the meet with 85 each and Tyler Schulte had 86. Craig Loeffler and Chad Tilleraas had 93s.
GIRLS GOLF: A victory over Chatfield secured the conference championship for the Caledonia/Spring Grove girls golf team. Coach Ken Van Den Boom said the team score of 186 was a good one considering that the temperature was only 44 and winds were strong at 30 mph. Chatfield had 233. Janelle Lilliquist was once again medalist with a score of 44. Kateynn Hauser had a 46, Kelsey Kruse shot a 47 and Laura Roesler had a 49. Brenda Welscher had a 50 and Kelly Bauer a 55.
Van Den Boom was also pleased with the junior varsityís score of 211. Chelsea McManimon-Moe ended the round with a 50; Clare McCarthy had 51; Savanna Daley shot 54 and Heather Kuecker had 56. Team score for Chatfield was 293.
Girls take fifth at Red Wing
tournament
Coach Van Den Boom was pleased with the girls score at the Red Wing Invitational on May 9, which he calls the ěpremiere eventî for girls golf in southeastern Minnesota. The team score was 357. Burnsville took first place by setting a record-low score of 329. Red Wing had 341, Woodbury shot a 346 and Edina had 349. Fifteen teams participated.
Kelsey Kruse was low for C/SG with a score of 85. Kelly Bauer had 88, Katelynn Hauser had 94 and Janelle Lilliquist had 90. Laura Roesler had 101 and Brenda Welscher had 107.
Girls take triangular at Somerby
The girls met Byron and Hayfield at Somerby golf course on May 8. C/SG won with a sccore of 184. Hayfield had 189 and Byron shot a 192.
ěSomerby is an awesome course,î said the coach. ěOur girls did a good job of staying out of trouble as there are many hazards on the course. We had three very solid scores produced by Katelynn Hauser (44), Kelsey Kruse (46) and Janelle Lilliquist (45). Brenda Welscher and Tayler Kurk each had 49 and Heather Kuecker shot a 52.
SOFTBALL: The Spring Grove/Caledonia girls softball team had no problem beating its two opponents by large margins last week. Three of the girls games were called after just 4 1/2 innings.
Team wins two against Cougars
The team took the Mabel-Canton Cougars in two games on May 8, winning 13-0 and 15-3.
In the first game, Libby Augedahl and Jordan OíHeron hit home runs and Jane Pettit contributed a triple. OíHeron and Karla Tweten had doubles. Pettit was 1 for 2 with 3 RBIs, and OíHeron went 3 for 4 and had 4 RBIs and 2 singles. Maria Betz was 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs and Kaysie Otterness was 3 for 3.
Pitcher Jane Pettit had three strike outs, one walk and allowed three hits.
In the second game, the Lions scored 15 runs off 12 hits and won 15-3.
Jordan OíHeron was 2 for 3 and Jane Pettit had a triple. Maria Betz was 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs, and Cassie Gran scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs. Kaysie Otterness was 2 for 3 and Amber Ideker and Sara Kasten each went 2 for 2.
For the Cougars, Kate Horihan had a double and an RBI in the third inning.
Beat Glenville-Emmons 17-4
The girls played another short game against Glenville-Emmons in Glenville on May 11 and went 4 1/2 innings, ending the game with a 17-4 score. SG/C played only four innings.
TRACK: Both the Caledonia/Spring Grove/Mabel-Canton boys and girls track teams finished third in the Three Rivers Conference track meet in Caledonia on May 13.
The boys had 92 points; Plainview won it with 185, followed by Lewiston Altura with 105.5.
The girls had 99 points; Rushford-Peterson/Houston won with 148, followed by Dover-Eyota/St. Charles with 144.5.
The girls had two first place finishes: Molly Furlong in the 100 meter dash and Sarah Colleran in the 200 meter dash.
The boys had three firsts: Andy Marnach in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, and the 4x200 meter relay team of Zach Gran, Luke Nelson, Kevin Klug, and Andy Marnach.
All first place finishers are named to the Three Rivers All Conference team.
