Memorial services scheduled

Memorial Day services will take place throughout Houston County Saturday and Monday.

Here is a list of the ones in the Caledonia area.

A county-wide Memorial Day program will be held at the Veteransí Memorial in front of the Houston County Courthouse in Caledonia on Saturday, May 27, at 10:30 a.m.

All American Legion and VFW posts in the county will be providing rifles at the salute to the dead.

The names of veterans who have passed away since May of 2005 will be read.

Caledonia

There will be a Memorial Day Service Monday, May 29, at the Caledonia High School Auditorium. The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. and is sponsored by the American Legion Post 191. Emcee will be Commander Harold Heaney.

Scholarship awards will be given to graduating seniors by the Legion and Auxiliary at 10 a.m. Everyone is welcome.

Brownsville

On Monday, May 29, a service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the Veterans Community Cemetery by VFW Post and Auxiliary.

At 10:45 a.m. a program will be held in the Brownsville Community Center for by the VFW Post and Auxiliary. Guest Speaker will be Don Loeslie from Warren Minnesota.

Special Note: Brownsville will also have a special Military Display this year by Fred Chatlos from Kansas City, MO. A good time to review this display would be right after our service at the river, during and after the potluck dinner.

11:30 a.m. Assemble on Main Street for March to the River

11:45 a.m. Tribute to United States Servicemen lost at sea and laying of the wreath float in the Mississippi River.

At noon a potluck dinner will be held at the Community Center. The public is welcome.

In case of inclement weather, the cemetery service and march to the river will be cancelled. Community Center Ceremony and Dinner will be held as scheduled.

New Albin

Memorial Day services will be held at 9 a.m. at the New Albin Community Center.

All Veterans, VFW members, Ladies Auxiliary, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Brownies will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Center. Please bring your flags.

After the program military taps will be held at the Community Center and also at the City Cemetery. Everyone is welcome.

Spring Grove

Services for Memorial Day will be held on Monday, May 30, beginning at 10 a.m. A parade will proceed at 9:45 a.m. from the school to the park. The Spring Grove High School Band will perform two numbers.

In case of inclement weather, the program will be held in the school auditorium.

Houston

Memorial Day services will be held in the park on Monday, May 29, at 10 a.m. In case of inclement weather, services will be held at the Houston High School. Emily Hegland, Callie Schneider and Rachel Scanlan of Caledonia will sing the National Anthem. The Houston High School band will perform.

Speaker will be Mary Rostad. Matt Kildahl will be honored for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Dan and Chris Kildahl will play taps.

Hokah

Memorial Day services will begin with the placing of the wreaths at 8:15 a.m. at the Root River Bridge and Convent Cemetery on Monday. The parade will be at 9 a.m. starting at City Hall and proceeding to the city park. Ceremonies will then be held at the two cemeteries.
