Planning commission puts hunting preserve, hog feedlot on hold

Two applications for conditional use permits were tabled at the April 27 Houston County Planning Commissionís meeting.

They will both be considered at the next meeting on May 25.

One was for Larry Ledebuhr, Mound Prairie Township, who applied for a permit to run an outdoor commercial recreation area - hunting preserve.

Board members said they wanted to walk Ledebuhrís 300-acre parcel in sections five and 31 on May 23.

People argued for and against the issue at the hearing. Those against it cited safety issues and the possibility of the animals spreading disease.

Supporters countered that the location was remote enough to not be a danger to others, and that the fenced in deer would be closely monitored and regulated.

Commissioners also put off a decision on a permit for Scott Sanness. He wants to expand an animal feedlot up to 480 animal units and construct a manure storage basin in section eight of Wilmington Township. It is a smaller version of a plan that commissioners and the county board voted down in January and February.

The board wants to consider questions that have been submitted by Rochester attorney Frederick S. Suhler, Jr. He has been hired by people who live near the property. Neighbors voiced strong opposition to Sannessí earlier conditional use permit application. They feared air and water pollution, property devaluation, and a deterrence to future growth in the area.
