BASEBALL: Caledonia is starting to turn its baseball fortunes around.
The Warriors won two games last week, after starting the season 0-7.
They beat Wabasha-Kellogg at home 9-8 on April 24, then held on to beat Elgin-Millville at home on April 27.
The score of the Elgin game and the game against Goodhue on April 25 was not provided to The Argus.
BOYS GOLF: The Caledonia/Spring Grove boysí golf team had its best score of the season against Chatfield on April 25. The boys won 172-185.
ìAlek Eglinton is keeping his scores down, and Tyler Schulte shot a nice round of 42,î said Coach Mitch Mullins. ìWe need to improve before tournament time.î
Eglinton was medalist with a score of 40. Craig Loeffler, Chad Tilleraas and Tyler Hauser each shot a 45. Kyle Runningen had 46. Chatfieldís lowest score was 45.
The junior varsity also won its meet 197-217. Garrett Cross shot a 48, Mitchell Massman had 49; Luke Daley and Erik Fisch each shot 50.
Boys fall to Rushford
Caledonia lost to Rushford a day later at home, 170-176.
Coach Mullins was pleased with the top two scores against Rushford-Peterson on April 24. Eglinton was co-medalist with a score of 41. Kyle Runningen shot a 43 and Tyler Schulte and Tyler Hauser each had 46. Chad Tilleraas and Craig Loeffler each shot 47.
ìWe are still looking for the number three and four scores. We need to continue to work hard and improve.î He said he is getting the most consistent scores from Alek Eglinton.
ìAlek played a lot of golf last summer and it is paying off,î said Mullins.
Rushford Peterson is first in the conference and C/SG is in second place.
The score was a little closer in the JV match, with C/SG shooting a 189 to 184 for R-P. Mitchell Massman had a 44, Luke Daley a 46; Garrett Cross shot a 48; and Erik Fisch had 51.
Beat Chatfield on tiebreaker
Caledonia edged Chatfield in boys golf by the closest of margins on April 28 in Chatfield.
Both teams scored 171 by their top four golfers. The tiebreaker was the fifth score. Kyle Runningen had a 45, one better than Nick Elder, giving the Warriors the win.
The victory put Caledonia in second place in the conference. ìWe didnít golf well, but [we golfed] well enough to win,î coach Mitch Mullins said.
The top four scorers were Alek Eglinton 41, Craig Loeffler and Tyler Hauser 43, and Tyler Schulte 44.
The junior varsity easily defeated its counterpart 179-194. ìThis was a great score for them,î Mullins said.
Jeremy Myhre led the team with a 42, followed by Erik Fisch 44, Garrett Cross 45, and Luke Daley 48.
ï Up next: The boys had a home meet against Fillmore Central on May 1. They travel to Rushford on May 5.
GIRLS GOLF: Caledonia defeated Chatfield 185-230 in an important girls golf meet on April 25 at Ma-Cal-Grove in Caledonia.
Kelsey Kruse led the team with a 42, followed by Janelle Lilliquist with 45 and Tayler Kurk and Katelynn Hauser with 49.
Coach Ken Van Den Boom said the score showed that his team is making progress. ìWe would like below 180 on our course by the end of the year,î he said. ìWe still only had four people in the 40s so our goal continues to be at least five girls in the 40s each meet.î
Chatfield was undefeated in the conference, so it was an important win, Van Den Boom added.
ìI have been proud of the progress of these ladies to this point in the season,î he said.
The JV scored 227, with Brenda Welscher at 54, Chelsea McManimon-Moe 57, and Heather Kuecker and Stephanie Landsom 58.
The junior high team also was successful in a triangular meet with Lanesboro and Mabel on April 25 at Mabel.
The Warriors finished with 214, easily topping Lanesboroís 276 and Mabelís 301. The top three finishers were Abby Schulte with 49, Sam Meyer with 51, and Sadie Lange with 55. Marissa Bruening and Emily Klug tied for fourth with 59.
ìAbby Schulte with a 49 is a great score,î Van Den Boom said.
The JV had another meet on April 24 at Fillmore Central, shooting 236. Van Den Boom called that a good start. It was the first meet of the season for many of the golfers.
ìAll of the young girls shot below 90, so it was a good start to their season,î Van Den Boom said. ìGreat to get our young girls on another course.î
ï Up next: The girls played at Decorah on May 1, and are at home against Fillmore Central on May 2. They play at Southland on may 6 and Byron on May 8.
SOFTBALL: Cassie Gran pitched a no-hitter on April 24 to give the Spring Grove/Caledonia girls softball team an 18-0 victory over LeRoy-Ostrander/Grand Meadow (LOGM)
The Lions went on to win 3 of 4 games last week to stretch their record to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
Coach Michelle Anderson noted that only four LOGM batters ever got to first base, and no one went beyond first. She had 10 strike outs and walked two.
Gran did a stand-out job at the plate as well as the mound, going 2 for 3 with a double, a triple, and 2 RBIs. She scored three runs.
Jordan OíHeron was 3 for 3 with a double in the first inning and 2 RBIs.
Kaysie Otterness contributed a double in the second inning, and Libby Augedahl was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs.
The junior varsity won its game 7-4.
Split twinbill
The Lions also split a doubleheader in Lyle against Pacelli on April 27. They lost the first game 10-3, then bounced back to win the second 14-3 on the road on April 27.
Jane Pettit got the win against the Athletics, going five innings and giving up four hits and four walks. She didnít strike anyone out.
Libby Augedahl went 4 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIís to spark the Lion offense. Maria Betz had two hits, including a big double in the first inning that drove in two rungs. Karla Tweeten and Pettit added two hits, and Sara Kasten hit a triple down the left field line in the fourth inning.
Gran took the loss in the first game. She gave up 10 walks in four innings. Anderson said the strike zone was very small. ìThis seemed to affect our confidence and aggressiveness at the plate,î she said. ìAs a team we need to work on overcoming these obstacles and continue to fight hard throughout the whole game.î
Anderson said that she was happy to see her team bounce back to win the second game. ìDefensively we had no errors in either game,î she added. ìOur young players are continuing to make the plays when we need them.î
Top Lancers by four
SG/C ended its week with a 12-8 win over La Crescent in Caledonia on April 28.
Gran pitched six innings to get the win. Pettit picked up a save in the seventh, when La Crescent scored three runs and threatened to make the game interesting.
Gran helped her cause with a 3-3 plate effort. She had four RBIs and lacked just a triple to hit for the cycle.
Pettit and Sara Wold had key triples too. Wold knocked in two runs with hers in the second, and Pettit hit hers in the fifth to clear the loaded basses. Kasten and Jordan OíHeron had two-hit games.
ï Up next: Spring Grove/Caledonia played at Chatfield on May 2. They host Houston on May 4 and Mabel-Canton on May 8, both at 4:30 p.m.
TRACK: Caledonia/Spring Grove/Mabel-Canton took home four first place awards in the 27th annual La Crescent American Legion Track Invitational on April 28.
Two girls had first place finishes, and one boys relay team had a first.
ï Girls results: Amelia Schaller paced the girls with two firsts. She won the discus with a throw of 124'00" and the shot put with 37'01". Molly Schaller finished sixth in each event with throws of 92'09" and 32'10" respectively.
Alecia Fruechte won the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.53. molly furlong was third with 113.73.
The 4x200 meter relay team of Rayauna Benson, Mary Ellen Schiltz, Sarah Colleran, and Laquita Becker was second with a time of 1:53.23.
Katie Wiste was second in the triple jump with a jump of 33'01". She was eighth in the long jump with 14'04.75".
The Caledonia 4x100 meter relay team of Molly Furlong, Laquita Becker, Ashley King, and Alecia Fruechte was fourth with 53.79.
ï Boys results: The boys were led by the 4x200 meter relay team of Zach Gran, Luke Nelson, Kevin Klug, and Andy Marnach. They won in a time of 1:33.8.
In the 100 meter dash, Kevin Klug took second with 11.53. In the 200 meter, Andy Marnach was second with 23.31 and Zach Gran was fourth with 23.57.
In the 400 meter dash, Luke Nelson was second with 52.81. The 4x100 relay team of Eddie Hodges, Derek Lager, Clint Grabhorn, and Kevin Klug was third with 46.13.
The 4x400 relay team of Nelson, Sam Snyder, Alex Guillien, and Zach Gran took fifth. The 4x800 meter relay team of Mike Roellich, Brad Hesse, Ryan Mehus, and Snyder took sixth. Hodges was also sixth in the long jump with a jump of 18'6".
Two firsts at Logan
At the Logan meet in La Crosse on April 18, the girls took fifth with 53 points, and the boys finished the last of nine teams with 7 points.
The girls had two firsts. The 4x100 relay of Molly Furlong, Laquita Becker, Sarah Colleran, and Alecia Fruechte won with a 52.9 second run.
Amelia Schaller was first with the discus with a throw of 124'11". It was a new school record, three inches farther than the 1986 distance that her aunt, Katie Serres, threw in 1986.
Schaller was second in the shot put with a toss of 36'8-1/2", a half inch behind the winner, Jessa Luebke of Tomah.
Sara Colleran wa second in the 200 meters with 27.7, a tenth of a second behind winning Emily Betz of Logan.
ï Up next: Caledonia travels to Rushford-Peterson on May 2, then has its first home track meet of the season on May 4 against Grand Meadow.
