BASEBALL: Caledonia defeated Rushford-Peterson 6-3 in baseball on May 2 in Caledonia. The Warriors had three other games last week. They lost at Chatfield 8-5 on May 1, beat Southland 4-3 on the road on May 4, then lost to La Crescent 11-5 at home on May 5. Caledonia hosts Kingsland on May 9, then travels to Fillmore Central on May 12.
BOYS GOLF: It was a disappointing meet against Rushford-Peterson for the boys golf team on May 5. The boys lost by more than 20 strokes, 163-185.
ìNobody golfed well,î said coach Mitch Mullins, ìWe will have to bounce back and get better before tournament time.î
Alek Eglinton and Kyle Runningen each shot 46 at the Ferndale course in Rushford. Tyler Schulte had a 47 and Chad Tilleraas had a 49. The two other varsity golfers, Mitchell Massman and Craig Loeffler, had 50 each.
The medalist was Matt Halverson, who shot a 37.
ìIt was not one of our better outings against a very good golf team,î said Mullins.
The junior varsity golfers had a good round and won their match 203-209. Garrett Cross had 47; Chris Connelly shot a 51; Jeremy Myhre shot 52 and Luke Daley had 53.
Erik Fisch scored a 54 and Bryan Wilhelmson a 59.
Medalist was Justin Simon with a score of 46.
Boys beat Fillmore Central
C/SG defeated Fillmore Central 174-192 on a drizzly Monday afternoon May 1.
Tyler Schulte paced the team with a 40, which coach Mitch Mullins called a nice round.
ìMitchell Massman came down with his score [of 43] to help us out,î Mullins added. The other top two scorers were Alek Eglington 45, and Chad Tilleraas 46.
The JV beat the Falconís varsity with a 196. They were led by Luke Daleyís 43. Erik Fisch had 46, Garrett Cross 47, and Jeremy Myhre 49.
ï Up next: The boys golfed at Lake City on May 8 and at Fillmore Central on May 9.
The boys travel to Southland May 15 and are in Waukon on May 16.
The team meets Southland at home on May 19 for the last match of the regular season.
GIRLS GOLF: A heavy schedule last week didnít seem to affect the girls golf team adversely as it added three more to the ìwinsî column. Janelle Lilliquist was medalist at every meet.
On May 1 at the Oneota course in Decorah, Lilliquist was medalist with 43. Kelly Bauer had 44, Tayler Kurk shot 45 and Brenda Welscher and Katelynn Hauser had 46 each. Laura Roesler shot a 49. C/SG won the meet with a team score of 178 to 210 for Decorah.
ìA score of 178 in Decorah was a strong start to the week,î said coach Ken Van Den Boom. ìWe had all six golfers in the 40s.
ìThe B squad did a nice job with a score of 213. Savanna Daley was medalist with a 45. Samantha Meyer was medalist at Chatfield with a 54 for the JV.î
Sarah Eppen had 52 for the B team, Chelsea McManimon- Moe had 56 and Samantha Ellingson shot a 60.
Also on May 1, the JV played at Chatfield, defeating the Gophers 223-313. Samantha Meyer and Abby Schulte were co-medalists with 54. Emily Klug shot a 56, and Molly Mullins a 59. Marissa Bruening carded a 60, Caitlin Stoltz a 73, Sadie Lange 74 and Bridget Macomber, 85.
On May 2, Caledonia/Spring Grove hosted Fillmore Central and La Crescent at Ma Cal Grove. Final scores were C/SG, 183; La Crescent, 241, and Fillmore Central, 254.
Janelle Lilliquist and Katelynn Hauser shared medalist honors with identical scores of 44. Kelsey Kruse had 46 and Laura Roesler had 49. Tayler Kurk shot 51 and Brenda Welscher had 53.
Heather Kuecker had a 50 for the B team, and Kelly Bauer shot a 51. Savanna Daley had 54 and Sarah Eppen ended the round with a 61.
On May 5, the JV team defeated Mabel with a 213 to Mabelís 299.Abby Schulte and Stephanie Landsom each shot 52, Marisa Bruening had 54 and Emily Klug had 55.
In Cresco on May 6, the team shot a 366 on 18 holes. The Cresco team shot a 420.
Janelle Lilliquist had medalist honors with an 84. Katelynn Hauser ended the round with a 92 and Kelsey Kruse and Laura Roesler each shot a 95. Kelly Bauer had 100 and Tayler Kurk had 105.
The B-team golfers also had an excellent day at Cresco. After nine holes, Savanna Daley had a 47; Heather Kuecker ended with a 54; Clare McCarthy shot 58 and Sarah Eppen had a 59 for a team score of 218. Cresco had only two golfers for JV so that score was incomplete.
The girls were scheduled for three meets on the road this week: Monday at Byron, Tuesday at Red Wing and Thursday, May 11, at Chatfield. The last home meet of the season will be Friday against Waukon. There are meets against Southland scheduled for Saturday and Monday to close out the season.
SOFTBALL: It took nine innings for Houston to beat Spring Grove/Caledonia 8-6 in softball on May 4.
The game, played on a windy Caledonia field, featured a big comeback by the Lions, who scored three times in the seventh to knot the game at 6.
Houston took a 5-0 lead in the first, but won the game with two runs in the ninth inning. The Hurricanes also got a great defensive play when second baseman Heather Boldt caught Cassie Granís line drive in with the potential winning run on third base. Boldt then threw to third to double up the runner.
SG/Cís comeback featured two runs in the fifth knocked in by Libby Augedahl, who went 2 for 5. Then the Lions scored three in the seventh to tie the game. Sara Kasten and Maria Betz got RBIs, then Kaysie Otterness tied the game with a two-out single.
Gran pitched all nine innings, giving up seven hits, walking seven, and striking out two.
Houstonís Chelsey Vix got the win with a complete game effort. She gave up 11 hits, but walked only three batters and struck out six.
The SG/C JV lost 14-3.
Chatfield 5, SG/C 4
In the other game last week, the Lions lost a road game to Chatfield 5-4 on May 2.
It was another near-comeback win for SG/C, which trailed 3-1 after four before taking a 4-3 lead in the fifth. Chatfield won it with single runs in the fifth and sixth.
Jane Pettit led the offense, going 3 for 3 with a double and RBI. Pettit also took the loss, giving up eight hits, walking two, and striking out two.
SG/C is now 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the three Rivers South conference.
ï Up next: The Lions host Mabel-Canton on May 8, then play at Glennville-Emmons on May 11 and La Crescent on May 13.
TRACK: Caledonia hosts the Three Rivers conference meet on May 13.
Nine teams will be competing. Field events start at 10 a.m., running events at 11.15.
Caledonia/Spring Grove/Mabel-Canton had two varsity events last week.
They competed at the the Rushford-Peterson Booster Club Invitational on May 2 at the Ben Niggle Sports Complex, then hosted Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Southland (GMLOS) on May 4. No team scores were kept.
Four firsts at R-P meet
The track teams took home four first place awards at the Rushford-Peterson Booster Club Invitational on May 2 at the Ben Niggle Sports Complex.
ï Boys results: Andy Marnach was first in the 200 meter dash in a time of 23.15. Zach Gran was second with 23.36.
The 4x100 meter relay team of Eddie Hodges, Clint Grabhorn, Derek Lager, and Kevin Klug was first with 45.65.
The 4x200 meter relay team of Zach Gran, Luke Nelson, Kevin Klug, and Andy Marnach won with a time of 1.34.04.
Kevin Klug was second in the 100 meter dash with 11.78. Luke Nelson was fourth in the 400 meter dash with 53.54.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Sam Snyder, Dustin King, Alex Guillien, and Luke Nelson was fifth with a time of 3.43.89.
The 4x800 meter relay team of Alex LeFebvre, Sam Snyder, Brad Hesse, and Ryan Mehus was fourth with a time of 9.03.
Andrell Hudson was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 43'6.5".
ï Girls results: Alecia Fruechte was the only girl to take first. She did in the high jump with a jump of 5'02".
Amelia Schaller was second in the shot put with 36'0.5". Molly Schaller was fifth with 33'4.5".
Amelia Schaller was second in the discus with a throw of 123'02". Molly Schaller was sixth with 93'00".
In the 100 meter dash, Alecia Fruechte was third with 13.81 and Laquita Becker was fifth with 14.14.
In the 200 meter dash, Sarah Colleran was third with 27.84 one tenth of a second ahead of teammate Ashley King.
Colleran was second in the 400 meter dash in 1:03.03.
The 4x100 meter relay team of Molly Furlong, Laquita Becker, Sarah Colleran, and Alecia Fruechte was second with 53.35.
The 4x200 meter relay team of Rayauna Benson, Mary Ellen Schultz, Megan King, and Laquita Becker was fifth with 1:55.41.
Many firsts against GMLOS
Caledonia had numerous first place finishes in the meet against GMLOS.
Amelia Schaller set a new school record in the discus with a throw of 131'07", breaking her old record of 124'11" that she had set on April 18.
Other firsts for the girls were Megan Buttell, 400 meter dash, 1:14.36; Alecia Welscher, 11 meter hurdles, 20.63; 4x100 meter relay team of Furlong, Ashley King, Becker, and Fruechte, 54.84; 4x200 meter relay team of Benson, Schiltz, Megan King, and Becker, 1:56.63; Alecia Fruechte, high jump, 5'00"; and Erica Myhre, pole vault, 5'06".
Boys first place finishers were Andy Marnach, 100 meter dash, 11.52; Luke Nelson, 400 meter dash, 55.57; 4x200 meter team of Gran, Nelson, Marnach, and Kevin Klug, 1:36.28; and Andrell Hudson, shot put, 44'4.75".
Junior high meet
Track athletes from grades 7-9 took part in the Three Rivers Conference meet in St. Charles on May 6.
The boys finished second of eight teams with 248 points. Plainview won with 441.
The girls finished seventh with 106 points. Dover-Eyota/St. Charles won with 322.50.
