Alternate side
parking in effect

Caledoniaís winter parking policy is in place, and people are getting some reminders.

Caledonia police officer James Logan tagged 50-plus cars on November 1 with warning tickets for alternate side parking violations, then handed out 20-30 more warning tickets on November 2.

The rules run from November 1 through March 31.

Between the hours of midnight to 6:00 a.m., vehicles must be parked on the even numbered side of the street on even numbered days, and on the odd numbered side of the street on odd numbered days.

Alternate side parking does not apply to streets which allow parking on only one side of the street.

It applies to anything sitting on a street, such as a vehicle, trailer, wagon, or dumpster.

Police chief Randy Shefelbine said officers will be giving out warning tickets for the first week, then will switch to regular tickets.

The key is for people to park for the next day, because the rules apply for the midnight-6 a.m. period, Shefelbine said.

ìSo itís a little confusing, but I think it works,î Shefelbine said.

Some people have called and questioned why the policy is in place now, even though there is no snow, Shefelbine said. The idea is to get people in the routine of doing it, he said. ìWho knows when the snow will come?î he asked.

People have generally had a good reception to the rule, which is in its second year, Shefelbine added.
