BOYS SOCCER: The Caledonia High School boys soccer team faces its biggest test of the year this week.
The Warriors, seeded second in the Section 1A tournament, have two games that will decide whether they will advance to the state soccer tournament.
First they play third seeded Winona High School on Tuesday at home. If they win, they will play on Thursday against either top-seeded Lourdes in Rochester, or against fourth-seeded La Crescent in Caledonia. The winner will advance to the state tournament. Lourdes beat La Crescent 4-1 earlier this year.
Game times hadnít been determined when this paper was prepared on October 16. The high seed sets the time.
Caledonia (15-3-1) is playing well heading into their big week. The boys beat Plainview/Elgin-Millville (PEM) 4-0 at home on October 12 in their last regular season game.
Then they opened the play-offs with a 4-0 win at home on October 14 against Stewartville.
FOOTBALL: Caledonia held Kingsland to one defensive touchdown a 26-6 Homecoming win on October 13.
Kingsland scored its only TD 36 seconds into the game when Josh McGill intercepted a Kody Moore pass and ran untouched 48 yards down the left sideline for a score.
But Moore rebounded with a solid game, including three touchdown passes.
Andrell ìMookieî Hudson ran for 185 yards, and the defense held the Knights to no rushing yards and just 67 through the air.
ìI was very proud of our kids,î coach Carl Fruechte said. He felt it was one of the best games of the year, along with wins over Plainview/Elgin-Millville and Dover-Eyota.
VOLLEYBALL: The Caledonia volleyball squad defeated Southland in three games at home on Thursday, October 12. Scores for the games were 25-22, 26-24, and 26-24.
Coach Koepke said that his players made a couple of nice comebacks in games two and three. ìThe girls have been working very hard on developing different shots to use during their matches. It was nice to see the girls using these shots,î he said.
GIRLS SOCCER: The Caledonia girls shut out their first two opponents in post-season play in subsection soccer last week, destroying St. Charles 14-0 in a game that was cut short, and beating the Kasson-Mantorville Komets 4-0 on Saturday. Whether the girls will play in the finals Thursday depends on the outcome of their game against La Crescent Tuesday night.
