Caledonia/Spring Grove boysí long jumper, Eddie Hodges, was the lone event champion for the Warrior boys on Tuesday at the Holmen Invitational. The sophomoreís 20-1 foot jump topped the field. Some believe the Warriors would have won the 4x100 meter relay, but the baton was dropped at a time when the Warriors were leading.
Overall, the team was a third to Holmen and Independence/Gilmanton. "I was very happy with our performance," said coach Carl Fruechte. "It was our first outdoor meet and it was extremely cold. We came out of the meet without any injuries," he said.Ý
"Iíve come to an understanding with our athletes about the importance of warming up. I want them to stay healthy," Fruechte said.
"We had a lot of second place finishes," Fruechte said.
Junior Zach Gran was second in the 100 meter dash (11.73) and was pushed by Derek Lager and Cody Peterson (12.03 and 12.11), who finished third and fourth. It was the same story in the 200 meter dash for Gran (24.64), with Hodges finishing third just ahead of Lager (25.25 and 25.45).
Second place also went to the 4x200 meter relay team of Eddie VanRavenhorst, Casey Bauer, Isaac Fruechte, and Petersen. They finished the race in (1:42.46).
Andrell Hudson was second in the shot put with a throw of 47 ft. 03 in.
Sophomore Jesse Christian was fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (19.69). "I think Jesse is coming on," Fruechte said. Team mate Ryan Mehus was fourth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:26.45. Also gaining a fourth place finish was sophomore David Jergenson in the 400 meter dash (59.52).
Fourth place went to the 4x400 relay team of Christian, Derek Beier, Jergenson, and Hodges. The team finished in 4:08.26.
Fruechte was pleased with the showing of Mehus and Brad Hesse, who placed fifth and sixth, respectively in the 800 meter run. Beier was sixth in the triple jump.
"I know our kids want to do well right away, but I think the warm weather will bring out the best from them," Fruechte said. He said that track requires more patience from the athletes, as well as the coaches. "Itís a drawn out season."
